The Sea of Tranquility
Sometimes its easier to pretend nothing is wrong than to face the fact that everything is wrong, but you're powerless to do anything about it.
The Sea of Tranquility
Maybe if I could have lived with that slight imperfection, I wouldn't be living with such a huge one now.
The Sea of Tranquility
No matter how good he looks right now, Josh Bennett without work books & the smell of sawdust is all sorts of wrong.

Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions
(Going to lump these together because a LOT of quotes)
* Perspective is a key to not coming unglued.
* I can face things that are out of my control & not act out of control.
* If I know there is potential good hidden within each chaotic situation, I can loosen my grip on control.
* I like the thought of "impossible" being erased from my vocabulary.
* Forgiveness is mandatory - reconciliation is optional.
* Do not check in with the screaming demands of the world before you exchange whispers with God.
* Satan loves it when we do his work for him by dumping on each other.
* Choosing a gentle reply doesn't mean your weak; it actually means you possess a rare & godly strength.
* Feelings are indicators - not dictators.
* The one who holds their tongue is the one who holds the power.
* When we operate according to God's word - we operate according to God's will.
* Am I trying to "prove" or "Improve"? Prove I am right - or improve my relationship?
* Gratitude diffuses attitude

What Women Fear
Most of our common fears are actually heightened responses to what we perceive threatens our life.
What Women Fear
To truly believe with everything in me as the Bible says, that death is sweeter than life, would revolutionize the way I live & love. It would constantly remind me that the worst isnt as bad as it seems because He is on the other side of it.
What Women Fear
At its core, it is the recognition that I do not have control of life. God Himself knows my last day on this earth & how it is that I will be brought to Him. It isn't for me to know. As with so many other fears, this struggle is in the acknowledgement that no matter how long I spend worrying about it, I won't be any closer to an answer.

Heroes & Monsters
The most fascinating people in the world are the people who are most fascinated by the world, & those same people are the ones who change the world. No one who's ever influenced this planet has ever done so without being remarkably curious.
Heroes & Monsters
I want love without drama, romance without pain. I want intimacy without vulnerability. I want a guarantee. I want something that doesnt exist. Maybe we all do... maybe we're all chasing unicorns.
Heroes & Monsters
Laughter is the evidence that we're still here, the proof that our tragedies will not define us forever. Laughter is the language of the survivor.
Heroes & Monsters
I suppose we all hit a point when no one has to describe fear & confusion for us anymore, a point when life carves it into us.
Heroes & Monsters
... he does know how to make me laugh & sometimes there is no better way to love someone than that...
Mondays with my Old Pastor
Motivation is what mobilizes a pereson to perform an activity. It's what moves us to undertake something with hope & makes us carry it out as we overcame obstacles that arise, by applying the necessary effort.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
Simply live with God. The rest will happen by itself & that will take care of all your worries. Why should I worry? It's not my responsibility to think about myself. My responsibility is to think about God. It's God's responsibility to think about me.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
The most important thing is not starting the race, but rather the unwavering determination to reach the finish line.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
That's just how I want to be Lord, a simple instrument fulfilling an eternal purpose. The most useless instrument, but in the most useful hands: Your hands.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
Don't view the Bible as your workbook. Make it a collection of love letters that God has written to you. Then when you read it, it will cease to be an obligation & turn into sheer delight.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
It is only when we have said good-bye that we feel & understand the strength with which we have loved.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
We want our lives to be pure nectar without any problems...
A true winner is not someone who does not see difficulties but rather one who is not frightened by them & does not retreat or turn back. That's why we can declare without fear of being wrong that difficulties are advantageous. They product maturity & growth. Every person needs a real storm in his life to make him understand how much he has worried about light showers & simple fleeting nonsense.
The important thing is not to flee from the storm but rather to have faith & trust that it will pass & will leave something good in our lives.

What we may consider unpleasant storms often are gusts of wind that redirect our ships to important ports that we never would have reached if we had had a pleasant crossing.

Love them. Even those who despise you... especially them, because those who deserve it the least are the ones who need it the most.
Mondays with my Old Pastor
Grace is receiving that which we do not deserve; mercy is not receiving what we do deserve
Mondays with my Old Pastor
Grace is love in action. It's possible to give without loving, but its totally impossible to love without giving ....
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecution, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. ~2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Mondays with My Old Pastor
God allows obstacles to come our way & doesnt prevent us from making mistakes, because the resulting weakness can actually turn into our true strength.

Mondays with my Old Pastor
It's on our knees before Him where we find balance. When you're temped to think you lack courage, look at the cross.
Monday's with my Old Pastor
You should read a lot, especially the Bible, but also seek to soak yourself with wisdom from others. A good book will make you grow. They are like mines. Mines full of riches. Each chapter is like a showcase that is hiding treasures, waiting for someone to discover them.
Monday's with my Old Pastor
"My life has sprung forth from the shade of the cross. I have always lived proteced by it, & I want the cross to be the ladder that lifts me up to His presence when my time comes."
Monday's with my Old Pastor
Serving Him implies entering a battle & it is wise to remember that in a battle there are no soliders without wounds.

CS Lewis
If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.
Want/Need - Crazy Love - Francis Chan
The irony is that while God doesnt NEED us but still WANTS us, we desperately NEED God, but dont really WANT Him most of the time.
He treasures us & anticipates our departure from this earth to be with Him - & we wonder, indifferently, how much we have to do for Him to just get by.
He treasures us & anticipates our departure from this earth to be with Him - & we wonder, indifferently, how much we have to do for Him to just get by.
Worry/Stress - Crazy Love - Francis Chan
WORRY implies that we dont quite trust that God is big enough, powerful enough, or loving enough to take care of what's happening in our lives.
STRESS says that the things we are involved in are important enough to merit our impatience, our lack of grace towards others, or our tight grip of control.
Basically, these 2 behaviors communicate that its OK to sin & not trust God because the stuff in my life is somehow exceptional.

Francis Chan - Crazy Love
*We are slow to listen, quick to speak, & quick to become angry. The wise man comes to God without saying a word & stands in awe of Him.
*The point of your life is to point to Him.
*Stories of peole who died after living Godly lives are stories with happy endings.
*Harsh words & the loving truth often go hand in hand.
*Our greatest fear as individuals & as a church should not be of failure, but of succeeding at the things in life that dont really matter.-Tim Kizziar
*Something is wrong when our lives make sense to unbelievers.
*How would my life change if I actually thought of each person I came into contact with as Christ - the person driving painfully slow in front of me, the checker at the grocery story who seems more interested in chatting than ringing up items, the member of my own family with whom I cant seem to have a conversation and not get annoyed?

Under the Overpass
Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
"Sacrifice promotes believability" - Francis Chan
"We should be terrified if we have mastered the art of becoming convicted & doing nothing in response" - Francis Chan
Psalm 34:18 says "the Lord is close to the broken hearted"... I wonder if pretending you're not broken keeps God at a distance.
On youth groups coming to serve the homeless:
"Something critical is missing in places that care for the broken & needy, if the only people there are also broken & needy"
On preachers preaching nothing but Fire & Brimstone in shelters:
"Jesus did thunder warnings of suffering & condemnation, but primarily to those who were convinced they were healthy & in no need of Him. To the weak, diseased, hungry & sin-bound, He had another message. Come to me, all you who are weary & burdened..."
On the same issue:
"You will never scare anyone into Heaven".... I began to see the truth in that statement at the Denver Rescue mission. Telling someone who is suffering deeply that he's going to suffer more is probably a waste of breath. Its like warning someone who is already starving that they're about to get really hungry. But tell him of a restaurant that serves heaping meals to all who come no matter where they're from or what they look like, & he's more likely to listen.... weren't these well-intentioned speakers condeming the broken for being broken?"
"Jesus promises a life in which we increasinly have to stretch out our hands & be lead into places where we would rather not go" -Henri Nouwen
*Sam learned to see that all God's children are beggars at the foot of the cross, broken people in need of mending.
*A church is just a building if there's no one in it.
*Begging is hard - its something you expect hungry dogs to do - but not men & women made in God's image.
On children noticing the homeless while adults ignore:
"While kids might pretend people dont exist do, its the parents who pretend that unwanted people who do exist dont."
*A hungry man can be a fast learner. When you come to a table with nothing but need, you are grateful for things you might have pushed aside before. And when you kneel, hungry & broken at His table, you receive a grace from Him you might, at some other times, have comletely missed.
*Why do we kick drug users out of the church while quietly over looking those who are ignoring their own different but equally destructive sins? Why do we reject the loving, self-sacrificing, giving, encouraging, Jesus-pursuing drug addict but recruit the clean, self-interested, gossiping, loveless church goer?
*Why do we so often overlook obvious ways to show the love of God we so loudly proclaim?
On a man who the homeless called "The Jesus guy" because he brings pizza & conversation... he said he never once "preached" the message of Jesus:
"Isnt it amazing that when we live as we're called & do what we're commanded, the gospel still gets preached"
On a church that ignored Sam & Mike - but had a sermon that was very precise & scheduled:
"What says more about who you are in Christ - how loudly you say AMEN! in the service or how well you treat strangers in the foyer?"
"Heavenly expectation begins precisely at the moment when earthly expectation sinks down in weakness & despair"
*Again & again it seems that the culture we had returned to knew how to enjoy God's material blessings, but had forgotten - or didnt are to know - how to use those blessings to help others in Jesus' name.
On whether or not to give money/help the homeless (use for drugs/alchol):
*We're responsible to hellp others towards hope in Jesus' name... but we're not responsible for their choices.

When people ask me why I run, I tell them, there's not really a reason, its just the adrenalin when you start, & the feeling when you cross that finish line, & know that you are a winner no matter what place you got.

I believe...
...That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in awhile
and you must forgive them for that.
...that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.
...that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.
...that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.
...that you can keep going long after you think you cant.
...that either you control your attitude or it controls you
...that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down will be the ones to help you get back up.
...that sometimes when I'm angry, I have the right to be angry, but that doesnt give me the right to be cruel.
...that it isnt always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.
...that no matter how bad your heart is broken, the world doesnt stop for your grief.
...that our background & circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.
...that you shouldnt be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.
...that two people can look at the exact same thing & see something totally different.
...that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who dont even know you.
...that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being
...that the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon
...the happiest of people dont necessarily have the best of everything - they just make the most of everything they have.
and you must forgive them for that.

The Bereaved Mother
Do not judge the bereaved mother. She comes in many forms.
She is breathing, but she is dying.
She may look young, but inside she has become ancient.
She smiles, but her heart sobs.
She walks, talks, she cooks, she cleans, she works.
She IS but she IS NOT, all at once.
She is here, but part of her is elsewhere for eternity.

Women of the Bible
*Victory is not overcoming sin, or the devil, or the world. True, lasting victory is only found when Jesus overcomes me.
*The failures of those we follow can easily become our own failures if we are not careful
*God holds Adam more accountable than Eve even though she was first to eat of the forbidden fruit. Failing to lead rightly is sin.
*Be careful what you say about the faults & mistakes of others - they may hae already been to the cross about them.
*Often, even our CORRECT criticisms of other people are motivated by an INCORRECT attitude of the heart.
*Israel was in deep trouble! They had nowhere to look except up. Often it is that way in our lives as well. As long as we can figure our way out of our problems, we dont look to God. I wonder how many times difficulties have come into our lives because the Lord has delivered us into the hands of trials to get us to the place where we will cry out to Him.

The boy who came back from Heaven
Self-pit imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem & the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are & the larger the problem seems to grow. Awareness of others is a healthy antidote to this self-focus.
We're not the only ones with issues, & usually our own struggles are far from the worst we know about. There is never a moment in life when it's impossible to have a heart filled with gratitiude - no matter what happens.

Ruth: Love, Loss & Legacy
***It is our wisdom to make the best of that which is, for it is seldom that changing our place is mending it. -Matthew Henry
***God's ways are not always the most practical, popular, or unopposed, but they are the most blessed.
***How sad it is when people only HEAR about God's blessing, but never experience it, because they are not in the place where God can bless them. -Warren Wiersbe
***Obedience to God is often wrought with a slew of obstacles that persuade us to change our minds.
***Lack of honest communication has to be one of the ultimate destroyers of relationships, while learning the
quality of gracious but bold speech can be a balm in bitter & complicated situations.
***When God is at work, bitter hopelessness can be the beginning of some surprising good -Hubbard
***May the gospel's truth silence every accusing voice & erase every guilty thought.
***Just as the hollow of winter mysteriously gives rise to the bounty of spring, so times of humbling & hardship prepare us for a wealth of blessing we would have otherwise been unable to handle.
***Its possible that God is more inclined to tend to our outbursts than our detached silence.
***This may be one of the most tragic ways for a Christian to spend her life: In the right place with all the right resources but without a willing heart. ........I so desperately do not want to get to the end of my life to find I've missed having an eternal impact because I made all of life's decisions based solely on what made sense for me & what was for my benefit - unwilling to yield myself to the Lord.
***All I know is that laying down our lives for others, for the sake of Jesus, is never wasted. No matter how quiet, how humble, how thankless, God is making a name for you - one that will last an eternity.

When I was 10, I read fairy tales in secret & would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am 50, I read them openly. When I became a man, I put away childish things - including the fear of childishness & the desire to be very grown up.
G.K. Chesterton
Fairy Tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist! Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed!

Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon & night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.

"An Absense so Great"
- How could I ever prepare for an absence the size of you?
- Absence is to love what wind is to fire; it extinguishes the small, it enkindles the great. -Comte De Bussy-Rabutin
- How little it takes to appease us when we trust those around us to keep us safe.
- Suzanne was bound by the desire all have when faced with grave emptiness; the yearning to keep the old routines, hoping they might wash away despair. And yet, they couldnt because something - everything - had changed.
- I remember that the pastor has said the word "Talent" came from a Roman coin & was a currency. If I could just learn how to spend it wisely.

The Christian answered, "The power is all on my side. I can love you while you torture me to death"

War inside...
A man told his grandon - "A terrible fight is going on inside of me - a fight between two wolves. One is evil & represents hate, anger & arrogance, intolerance & superority. The other is good & represents joy, peace, love, tolerance, understanding, humilty, kindness, empathy, generosity & compassion.
This same fight is going on inside you - inside every other person too"
The grandson then asked - "Which wolf will win"
The old man replied simply: "The one you feed"

*I learned that just as there are untold types of injuries that all require different treatments, each person also sustains injuries to their hidden man - their mind, will & emotions. They're just as real as any physical injury, but so often people seek help for the bodily damange & ignore the needs of the heart & soul. The Spirit can no more be ignored when it sustains injury than a mutilated leg or severed finger. -Jonah
*Be cautious & wise with your choise of who to talk to, but dont let it (a secret) stay inside you for too long. It'll eat up everything good & grow stronger as you grow weaker. But when you face it through the eyes of someone you trust, you will grow stronger, & it will weaken -Jonah

What Difference Do it Make?
*People ask “How’d that fells get that way?” See that aint the right question to be askin’ cause it might be that ain’t none a’ our business. Our business is to find out is there anything we can do to bring a change in their life. To bring opportunity. To bring hope. -Denver
*Most people on the streets know Jesus love ‘em. But they figure nobody ELSE loves ‘em BUT Jesus. Street people done heard more sermons than most preachers ever preached. Lotta good folks come ‘round the ‘hood, talking ‘bout Jesus this, Jesus that. Tellin us about Him is one thing… who gon’ stick around and SHOW us Jesus? –Denver
*Needy people don’t need no perfect people neither. When Jesus sent His disciples out, He sent Peter right along, knowin Peter had a bad temper & a potty mouth & was gon’ deny Him three times. He sent John & James even though they was full a’pride and fightin over the best seat at the table. He even sent Judas, knowin Judas was gon’ betray Him. Even though Jesus knowed all a’their sins & weakness, He sent ‘em anyways.
*Listen, if the devil ain’t messing with you, he’s already got you –Denver
*I aint got no way to read the mind a’ God, but I ‘xpect part a’His business is making it Christmas for somebody EVERY day! If all the Christians – I mean ALL of ‘em – got outta the pews on Sundays & into the streets, we’d shut the city down. We’d shut down hunger. We’d shut down lonliness. We’d shut down the notion that there is any such of a thing as a person that don’t deserve a kind word & a second chance. – Denver
*It is a blessing to the homeless when they see people who care. But to really help, you’ve got to get down in the pit with people & stay with them until they find the strength to get on your shoulders & climb out. Helping someone is when you find out how to help them move toward wholeness & then hang with them until they make a change”
*That Deborah would get cancer made no more sense than a drive-by shooting… what Denver had said three weeks earlier haunted me. “Those precious to God become important to Satan”….

Let it go
- We so easily allow the winter of regret to eradiate the joy of spring and all things new. Its a mental battle that is as powerful as any fought in trenches or in tanks.
- "Should" is something we can NOT control. It is the past, not the future. So why do we spend all our time beating ourselves up for something we cant get back?
- We cling to our dreams of what we wish the past could have been & set ourselves up to be hurt again & again
- How much of your life have you spent looking in the rearview mirror of your life? Spending too much time with your focus there can lead to a wreck!
- A person preoccupied with herself is a person not preoccupied with God
- I have discovered that its hard to fall off a pedestal when you are washing someone's feet.
- I heard someone say that the hour or two we spend worshipping on a Sunday is the time when we are the least honest & real. Perhaps that is because we are afraid to show who we really are in case we are rejected or judged.
- Kindness is underrated in our world. Simple acts of mercy leave more of the fragrance of Christ because they touch us where we live & where we are the thirstiest.
-Sheila Walsh
Mark Twain
Most people are bothered by those passages in Scriptures which they cannot understand, but as for me, I always notice that the passages in Scripture which troubles me most are those which I DO understand
Corrie Ten Bloom
The purpose of being guilty is to bring us to Jesus. Once we are there, then its purpose is finished. If we continue to make ourselves guilty - to blame ourselves - then that is sin in itself.
Let it go - Sheila Walsh
*I will have lots of quotes still to come - but this story really stood out.....
She opened the box that had been delivered that morning & peeled back layer upon layer of soft, pink tissue paper. Nestled inside was the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. She pulled it out & held it up to the sun that was streaming through her bedroom window.
The dress was exquisite. It was white & had satin ribbons around the waist that tied in a bow in the back. She tried it on & it fit as if it had been tailor made. Not usually given to spontaneity or to dancing, she found herself twirling around & round. The ribbons flew out behind her like flags in a summer breeze.
Suddenly, she caught sight of herself in the mirror. She almost didn't recognize herself: light, FREE, almost childlike. She stopped immediately & took off the dress. Putting it back in the box, she covered it once more with the tissue paper & placed the box under the bed. She took her old gray dress off the chair, pulled it over her head, & straightened her hair in the mirror.
"There," she said. "That's as it should be"

- Whatever you focus on - increases
- When you focus on the things you need, you'll find those needs increasing. If you concentrate your thoughts on what you DONT have, you will soon be concentrating on other things that you had forgotten you dont have - & feel worse!!! If you set your mind on loss - you are more likely to loose... but a GRATEFUL perspective brings happiness & abundance into a persons life.
- A life filled with opportunities and encouragement finds more & more opportunities & encouragement & success becomes inevitable.
